ADULT DRUM LESSONS
Learning the drums isn't just for children. Whether you've always wanted to play, are returning to the instrument after many years, or are simply looking for a rewarding new hobby, lessons are tailored to your individual interests, goals and experience.
Jeremy has over 12 years' experience teaching music and holds a Bachelor of Contemporary Music from the Victorian College of the Arts. With over 20 years' experience as a professional performing and recording drummer, he combines real-world musicianship with a relaxed, encouraging and personalised teaching approach.
Lessons are practical, engaging and designed around what you want to achieve. Some students want to learn their favourite songs, others are interested in developing solid technique, understanding music more deeply, or simply enjoying the challenge of learning something new. There is no fixed curriculum, allowing lessons to progress at a pace that feels comfortable while continuing to challenge and inspire.
Many adult students appreciate the opportunity to step away from work and everyday responsibilities, discovering the enjoyment, creativity and sense of achievement that comes from making music. Whether you're learning purely for enjoyment or working towards more specific musical goals, lessons provide a supportive environment in which to develop confidence, musicianship and a lifelong appreciation of drumming.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Absolutely. Many adult students begin lessons as complete beginners with no previous musical experience. Lessons start from wherever you're at and progress at a pace that feels comfortable, with no expectation that you already know how to play or read music. Whether your goal is to play your favourite songs, join a band or simply enjoy learning a new skill, lessons are tailored to your interests and experience.
-
Having something to practise on at home will help you make steady progress between lessons. Whilst a full drum kit is preferable, a practice pad and a pair of drumsticks are enough to begin developing technique and coordination. I'm happy to advise on suitable practice pads, electronic kits or acoustic drum kits to suit your goals, space and budget.
-
Lessons are available in 30, 45 and 60 minute formats. While 30-minute lessons can work well for some adults, I generally recommend 45 or 60 minutes, as this gives us more time to explore new material, learn songs and develop your playing without feeling rushed. I'm happy to help you choose the lesson length that best suits your goals, schedule and budget.

Lessons are built around the music you enjoy. Whether you're interested in rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz, indie, hip hop or many other styles, we'll use your favourite songs as the basis for developing your technique, musicality and confidence on the drums. If there's a particular artist, band or style you'd like to explore, I'll always do my best to incorporate it into your lessons
-
Every lesson is tailored to the individual, but a typical lesson might include learning grooves and fills, working on songs, developing technique and coordination, reading notation, and exploring new musical ideas. Lessons are structured while remaining relaxed and enjoyable, with content adapted to your goals, interests and pace.
Each student also has access to their own online lesson folder, where I upload the music, exercises and other material we cover, along with notes from each lesson to help guide practice between sessions. Whether you have plenty of time to practise or a busy schedule, I'll tailor what we work on between lessons to suit your goals, available time and learning pace, helping you continue making steady progress.

“As a mature aged student who had no prior drumming experience, I was keen to find a patient and intuitive teacher who would not only build my technique, but also my confidence to feel at home at the drums. Jeremy’s personalised approach accommodates for my broader musical inquisitiveness, incorporating these interests into our lessons. Highly recommended!” - Jenna D
